If you’re a parent - or probably any adult human - you’re bound to see the missing kid stats on social media.
Every once in a while, a meme or a video by a concerned group goes viral for the alarming claims around 400,000 kids vanish each year in the U.S. They’re often followed by accusations of a web of silence, or something about secret pedophile rings.
It’s easy to write these claims off as conspiracy theories. But are they?
Actually, a little research shows that the FBI reported 398,000 children under 18 went missing in 2019. Other countries have equally large numbers - 113,000 missing kids in the U.K., 100,000 in Germany, 20,000 in Australia. That’s a lot of missing kids worldwide.
It’s also a lot of missing kids in my lifetime. Like, millions. I should know a ton of people who’ve had their children kidnapped. And I don’t have a single one in my circle. What’s going on?
Please let me be clear. I’m not downplaying the horror of child kidnappings. One is too many, and if you kidnap a child, you should be mashed up into little pieces.
But I want to break down these numbers a bit, and to do that, I made this video. In it, we dive into these stats. How many kids actually go missing each year? Are they all abductions? What else is going on? And are things getting any better? (spoiler alert: Yes. Take heart. They are.)
