I’ve been hearing about the “trans genocide” threat for a while, but it seems like it ramped up last year. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre commemorated the “Transgender Day of Remembrance” during a press briefing in November, saying that the White House grieves for trans Americans killed in 2023.
Earlier in 2023, Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) said on “Real Time with Bill Maher” that members of the trans community are disproportionately more likely to be murdered than members of any other community. And a White House briefing even earlier in the year said that the trans community is “under attack right now.”
So, is there a transgender genocide?
Well, the number of trans Americans killed in 2023 was 26 in November during the White House press conference. The Human Rights Commission says during the entire year, “at least 30 transgender and gender non-conforming people” were killed.
But even those numbers aren’t cut and dry. I took a deeper dive into the statistics, looking at who was killed and how and why in this video.
Every loss of life is a tragedy. But framing this as a transgender genocide threat harms everyone, including the trans people this narrative is presumably intended to protect.
Check out my video on trans genocide here, and I’d love to hear your thoughts in the YouTube comments or here on Substack.
