Florida schools the College Board
DeSantis rejects an African American Studies course, and it's not about race.
In case you missed it …
Along with USA Today, leftist politicians wasted no time in declaring 'bigotry' and 'white supremacy' as motives for the mass killing in Monterey Park, CA, before Huu Can Tran was identified.
The Georgia attorney general is telling Atlanta media to stop referring to rioters as protesters, saying, “Peaceful protesters use words … rioters set police cars on fire.
Here’s an interesting piece on the “Never-ending War Against Brett Kavanaugh.” A new documentary that premiered at Sundance suggests there is more evidence against him that, for some reason, we haven’t heard yet.
Dear Friends—
Florida governor Ron DeSantis is once again causing a kerfuffle, this time for refusing to approve an Advanced Placement African American Studies course. AP courses are offered to high schoolers to allow them to earn college credit.
The White House press secretary called his move “incomprehensible” and claimed that it was aimed at preventing the study of black history, a charge that pointedly ignored the reasons behind Florida’s rejection of the class.
The objections
DeSantis:
“We want education, not indoctrination. If you fall on the side of indoctrination, we’re going to decline. If it’s education, then we will do it.”
He also said that going into the review, he was suspicious there was critical race theory in the curriculum … but that his actual review showed much worse.
“What’s one of the lessons about? Queer theory. Now, who would say that an important part of black history is queer theory? That is somebody pushing an agenda on our kids. And so when you look to see they have stuff about intersectionality, abolishing prisons, that’s a political agenda.”
The Florida Standard obtained a copy of the curriculum, although the College Board which runs Advanced Placement courses hadn’t made it public. The Standard reports that “Topics include “Black Queer Studies” and “Postracial Racism and Colorblindness.”
CBS News reports that the Florida Dept. of Education sent a letter to the College Board earlier this month, outlining the state’s objection to the course.
“In a one-page letter outlining concerns with the course, the FDOE takes issue with six topics listed within the proposed course curriculum, and their proposed readings: intersectionality and activism, Black queer studies, "Movements for Black Lives," "Black Feminist Literary Thought," reparations, and "Black Study and the Black Struggle in the 21st Century.’”
The backtracking
One day after DeSantis’ strong criticism of the course, the College Board responded. They say the course is being revised, and that they’ll release an “official framework” on Feb. 1, the first day of Black History Month.
Ten years ago, a governor would have been wildly afraid of rejecting a black studies course but times have changed. We’ve lived through several years of “you’re racist!” being a daily charge by someone, rarely for anything remotely resembling racism.
People aren’t buying it anymore.

So refreshing to hear that someone is finally speaking up about these inappropriate curricula being submitted for study in our Public Schools - a huge kudos from this Mom of 2 teenage boys. Though I rejected public school for my own children during the insanity of the Covid response, I ache for parents who feel public school is their only option. Seeing this good catch by FDOE, and the Governor backing them up, is encouraging. Maybe we are finally course corrected and I can start to consider State Universities again, in the next few years.
