The people who want to sew conflict in America are confusing racism, which implies a profound hatred with In-group preference that doesn't imply hatred. The authors also found that people compare their group to other groups, which contributes to self esteem. It's possible the groups that compare themselves less favorably to other groups are confusing racism with In-group preference as well.
