1. Journalism professor: “Show kids adult genitals”
Did you ever wonder how reporters can sometimes be so dumb? One reason … they go to journalism school.
Dr. Katja Thieme, a professor at the University of British Columbia, tweeted her “solution” to the situation of swimmer Riley Gaines, who has been explaining the effects of having to compete against biological males. Focusing on unwanted penises in women’s locker rooms – something no woman should have to face – the professor says we should groom them young …
The professor has now made her Twitter account private. And is still teaching future reporters.
2. The FBI has lost the public trust.
It's becoming clearer that the public no longer trusts the FBI.According to a recent NBC poll, the FBI's approval rating has dipped from 52% in late 2018 to just 37% now. Among Republicans, the figure stands at 17%. That’s low no matter what side of the political spectrum you’re on.
I’d argue that given its high-profile bad behavior, the FBI’s status is well-earned. Whatever the reason, though, when a public’s trust in governmental institutions drops this low, bad things are much more likely to happen.
3. Wired magazine would rather you be robbed than help cops
Wired magazine believes Ring cameras pose a danger to society. Why? Because Ring’s software allows you to share your videos with law enforcement, something the magazine says doesn't make communities safer and increases the chances of racial profiling.
“Homeowners shouldn’t be able to act as vigilantes” the article tells us, saying the sharing feature shouldn’t exist.
4. A YouTube host helps you discover the world
Peter Santenello says he makes “videos showing you a world that the media fails to capture.” He’s right.
With a GoPro camera and a friendly demeanor, Santenello travels through America and the world, engaging in honest, curious conversations with locals. Through him, I’ve discovered more about Appalachia, NY’s Hasidic community and life in Compton than I ever would have.
The media has its problems, but his channel is one of the solutions.
5. Finally, the feel good video of the day …
A robbery at a Stockton, CA, 7-11 didn’t go as planned.
That 7-11 video is this best thing I’ve seen in months. Hoping the tide has finally turned and the store owner won’t be arrested. Seriously, the balls of that guy with a rolling trash can...!
"Journalists = morons" framing aside, what's so insane about Thieme's opinion? Isn't sex education part of a parent's job? And doesn't basic anatomy have to be part of that? There's room for legitimate debate about suitable age and level of detail, but vilifying her doesn't get us anywhere.
As a child of the '90s I got most of my sex education from classmates' dirty jokes, the radio show Loveline, and smutty rap videos on BET Uncut. And that was before internet porn. I'm sure the typical parent could do better than that.
