Dear Friends —
Let’s just get this out of the way. All signs indicate that George Santos is a ridiculous liar.
I’m actually not going to quibble with any of these headlines. They’re right. And there are plenty more.
What I am going to question, however, is how Santos’s lies have been treated by the media vs. how President Biden’s lies have been covered.
Biden’s lies
President Biden has been lying since well before he took office. In fact, he had to drop out of campaigning for president in the late 1980s after reports he plagiarized a speech by a British leader. He was also accused of plagiarism in law school and of exaggerating his academic record.
In the plagiarized speech, Biden claimed that he was “the first in his family ever to go to a university,” (he wasn’t) and referred to his “ancestors, who worked in the coal mines of Northeast Pennsylvania” (they didn’t).
His lies since then have been numerous, but here are a few.
Last fall, Biden went on a 3-day bender where he claimed to go to more Jewish services than most practicing Jewsz;
“I probably went to shul more than many of you did. You all think I’m kidding. I’m not.”
He claimed he was raised in “the Puerto Rican community at home,” and said he lost “an awful lot” of his home in a house fire. He has claimed to have visited the Tree of Life Synagogue and marched in the civil rights movement. He said,
“I had the great honor of being arrested … on the streets of Soweto trying to get to see [Nelson] Mandela.”
He has made references to his son losing his life in Iraq (Beau Biden died of a brain tumor).
In fact, he made enough outlandish claims, an Orange County Register op-ed columnist referred to him as “the Original George Santos.”
And yet, he continues to get a pass from the same media that excused his classified documents, refused to report on the New York Post Hunter Biden laptop story, and has covered for his lies in the past by calling them "embellished narratives … to weave together his political identity."
To most people, the punishment of a political liar really depends on what party that person belongs to.
