The audience reactions were very telling.

That moderator was terrible.

Postscript to my comment above: a lie is a deliberate attempt to deceive. Trump absolutely believes what he says, regardless of what YOU believe. He says and fights for what he perceives is true. If I also agree with him, I hear no lies from Trump and am confused by those who say he is “a blustering liar.” The bluster, ok maybe, but no lies.

Trump is a truth teller which infuriates the bogus fact checkers. I did not watch more than clips on Newsmax (my choice since Fox is now dead to me) because even the idea of watching anything on CNN is anathema. People talking about Trump’s “lies” are so solipsistic they make me laugh!

I couldn't sit through the whole thing. What a mess. I can't fathom why Chris Licht, who seems intent on making CNN more news-oriented and less emotional, would choose such a personality-driven format that's so poorly suited to fact-checking and in-depth analysis of important issues.

The best way to cover politics, especially a blustering liar like Trump, is to start with shoe-leather reporting about how government policies affect people. Gather data. Consult with policy experts. THEN interview politicians about those issues in a controlled environment that leaves time for fact-checking and follow-up before going to air.

60 Minutes does this for an hour a week. Newspapers do it every day. Can't cable news channels, with their vast resources, do it too?
