Tucker’s back. Or at least he will be soon, as he announced he’s taking his show to Twitter.
With still no explanation to its viewers, Fox News silenced its top-rated host who’d ruffled feathers by exposing inconvenient truths, holding power to account, and bucking the uniparty narrative. He didn’t stay silent for long, though.
Tucker hits back
According to Axios, Tucker accused Fox of fraud and breaching his contract. His lawyers said Fox employees, including "Rupert Murdoch himself," broke promises to Carlson "intentionally and with reckless disregard for the truth."
Twitter, the same platform that was once seen as a playground for cancel culture – a deplatforming factory – has now become a free speech refuge. And the man to thank for it? None other than Elon Musk, a man as unpredictable as his rockets.
The new Twitter
This is the same platform that has been the stage for some of the most absurd performances in the virtual world and still has its full share of stupidity. But recently, Twitter has taken on a new identity, one that holds the promise of resurrecting the dying concept of free speech.
The new Twitter signifies a shift in the media landscape back towards a concept central to America: free speech. It’s a move towards a world where ideas are not stifled but celebrated, where discourse is not punished but promoted.
(I predicted, or at least hoped, this would be Twitter’s path, in my December piece: Elon Musk is creating another Fox News.)
Fox News used to be that rebellious platform, but has lately been stumbling badly. The Tucker Carlson firing was its worst self-inflicted wound in the network’s history, and the pathetically poor leaks to smear Tucker has only made it worse.
We still don’t know the details of how this will shake out. Will it just be Tucker’s show or will he build it into more? Will there be a TV streaming component to watch in your living room? Will New York Times reporters report to their therapists individually or in groups?
In the end, the successful return of Tucker Carlson isn’t about one man or one show. It’s a positive step towards media freedom, one where cancel culture and censorship fade into the background.
