Even as a child I never understood how lying to someone about looking bad was helpful to that person. Do these pants make me look fat? If you answer with an untruthful "No" instead of "That cut isn't very flattering." How have you helped them?

If I tell a girl it's ok to mutilate her body - which in no way makes her a boy - instead of "I know you're uncomfortable with the changes your body is going through, (puberty) but it gets better & signing up for irreversible damage and a lifetime of being dependent on a horrifying cocktail of drugs is not the way to address your feelings" how is that (1) gender affirming & (2) loving or helpful???

I am sick of trying to "discuss" this with people. If you are under age of consent the surgery and drug cocktail should be illegal. Full stop. You cannot consent to any of it because you do not have the capacity to do so. Adult males in a dress are not welcome in my bathroom because they have a clear mental illness and I do not think that I should have to worry about how that will manifest while I'm in a heightened vulnerable state. They are also not welcome to destroy my daughter's chances of awards or scholarships for athletics because they cannot win against other males. The pendulum swing will be very bad on this one & the sooner its stopped the better.

I choose not to indulge those dealing with gender dysphoria. If they are wrestling with their gender identity I will not add further to their confusion. A man is a man and a woman is a woman. If they choose to dress up and act like the opposite sex I could care in the least. Just don’t try to pull me into your confused state.

A typo of sorts here...

"If I met Caitlyn Jenner, I'd there’d be a strong temptation to"

Probably remove "I'd". One of my issues with reading when things are not correct.

As to the question of how this became such a big deal, there is a very large lobby in DC that had pushed for the legalization of same sex marriage. When they achieved that goal by SCOTUS ruling, they shifted gears to focus on transgenderism. Why is anybody’s guess, because as you pointed out that group were a very small fringe with little going for them, Bruce Jenner one of the forerunners. One could speculate on a variety of reasons; imo it is another of the destabilizing forces threatening the western way if life, or put another way part of the push into Marxist ideology, forcing control and group-think. Whatever the motivating force, it has certainly added to the national divide.

This whole controversy, which I find rather silly, comes down to mistakenly conflating sex, which is almost always binary, with gender, which exists on a spectrum. As my psych professor used to say, sex is between your legs and gender is between your ears.

Transgender folks want us to prioritize their gender over their sex in terms of their identity, which seems reasonable. I think we can do that while still prioritizing sex in contexts that relate more to the body than the brain, like athletics and reproductive health.

The most interesting question is how this became such a big deal, especially on the right. The New York Times ran a story a few weeks ago suggesting that social conservatives chose transgender rights as an animating issue after they lost the fight against gay marriage.

Let's try not to get too riled up about something so divisive. As a country we have more important things to do.
