This is an interesting one. Protecting the domestic shipping industry vs. lower prices for consumers, especially in Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

I'm not a big fan of protectionism, so I'm inclined to let the free market rule. It sounds like the economic effects could be unpredictable though. Maybe suspend it for a few years and then, assuming nothing goes haywire, repeal it.

This law is haywire. But I like your idea. Let’s pick out 10,000 other stupid laws like the Jones Act, suspend them, and after two years if we don’t miss them, hit delete.

Agree with your piece, we dont need the Jones Act anymore & many more regulations since 1913+

Boy, would I love to live through a period of times where laws were slashed by some huge percentage. We are so over regulated in this country, we have laws that overlap other laws, laws that aren’t enforced (like the border).... it’s such a mess. The Jones act is one great example.

I'm more than a little interested in watching how the new libertarian president of Argentina does. He seems a bit nutty, given his hair and his yelling, but he'll be slashing laws.

I’m watching him too. With avid interest.

With enough special interest laws, the nation is crippled, and the Huns, Vandals and Visigoths come in and reset the system.
