Ken, how is it possible that Israeli intelligence, and American for that matter, didn't know about the upcoming attack? Supposedly they were warned by Egyptian intelligence. If they did know, what are your thoughts on why it was allowed to happen? Was this Israel's 911?
I think we tend to underestimate how much data elite intelligence agencies like Mossad and CIA/NSA hoover up, and overestimate how effective they are at analyzing it. This was a nightmare for Israel. No way was it "allowed" to happen. Just a catastrophic intel failure, much like ours on 9/11.
When I was in Gaza during the kidnapping, I didn't see or hear from any U.S. source. The FBI, etc., who we dealt with, on a limited basis, had very little knowledge of the area. I suspect the U.S. has virtually no intel in Gaza.
I suspect that Israel's intelligence was lulled into complacency over Hamas' relatively minor issues over the last handful of years. I actually quite admire the Israeli attitude on this: "Yes, it's a big deal and we'll answer it, but only after war is won."
Regarding Egypt, there's always some warnings like that. I'm sure investigations will later ask if that was specific, believed or actionable.
