In October 1963, Attorney General Robert Kennedy authorized wiretapping Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s home and the offices of King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Within the next few months, surveillance widened to include King’s hotel rooms while he was on trips. The pretext? An informant had told the FBI that one of King’s advisers had been a member of the Communist Party just a few years before he began working with King.
The 'King as communist' thing is pretty strong. Until I read this I believed it to be true. I wonder which other things I believe are FBI misinformation?
Don, I don't really know enough history to say whether that's true or not. Certainly Nixon had his share of awfulness, from Hoover actions to IRS audits. The Patriot Act, which allowed much of this, started under Bush.
I'm not certain it's bipartisan, but I'm not sure it's not.
Cogent question. Add to it "why, in the most notoriousis-use of power by a Republican administration did the democrats expose it with such depthe and glee?" They'll never let anyone forget Watergate.

Nicely written--why do theses overreaches occur under Democratic administrations?
